Living in Alicante as an expat

Alicante and the wider Costa Blanca have one of the highest concentrations of British and Irish expats of anywhere in Spain, and the professional services infrastructure reflects that history — with decades of demand producing a well-developed network of English-speaking lawyers, accountants, gestors, doctors, and dentists across the city and the surrounding towns.

Alicante city itself is often underappreciated. Many expats in the area live in the surrounding towns — including Torrevieja, Santa Pola, Orihuela Costa and El Campello — and think of Alicante primarily as the nearest airport and city for services. But the city centre is genuinely pleasant, with a castle, a good food scene, and a pace of life that suits people looking for something more urban than the coastal towns without the scale of Madrid or Barcelona.

Pros and cons of living in Alicante

The case for Alicante: excellent weather — consistent and warm without the extreme summer heat of further south. Very affordable, particularly outside the city centre. Well-established expat infrastructure means English-speaking services are easy to find. Good airport connections. Lower cost of healthcare than the UK, with English-speaking private options readily available.

The honest caveats: the international job market is limited, and Alicante works well for retirees, remote workers, and the self-employed, but less so for people seeking Spanish employment. Some areas have developed into predominantly expat enclaves, which suits some people and not others. The city is not cosmopolitan in the way Barcelona or Madrid are.

Cost of living in Alicante

Alicante is among the most affordable destinations in this guide. Property prices and rents are lower than equivalent cities, and day-to-day costs — including food, utilities and services — are consistently reasonable.

A one-bedroom rental in central Alicante typically runs €700 to €1,100 per month. In the coastal towns and outer areas, lower still. For retirees and those on fixed incomes, Alicante and the Costa Blanca represent genuinely good value for the lifestyle on offer.
