Living in Malaga as an expat

Malaga has changed considerably over the past decade. Once thought of primarily as the gateway to the Costa del Sol rather than a destination in its own right, the city has developed a genuine cultural identity — with the Picasso Museum, a revitalised city centre and a growing food scene — and attracted a more diverse expat community than the traditional retiree-on-the-coast model.

The British and Irish expat community here is large and well-established. English-speaking professional services, including lawyers, accountants, gestors, doctors and dentists, are well represented across the city and province. The airport, one of Spain’s busiest, makes Malaga practical as a year-round base for people who travel frequently.

Living in Malaga as an expat has a distinct advantage over the coastal towns: it is a real city with real city infrastructure, but without the price premium of Madrid or Barcelona. You get the urban quality of life at a more manageable cost.

Moving to Malaga from the UK

Malaga is a popular enough destination that the local administrative offices have significant experience processing applications from British nationals. NIE appointments, residency registrations, and TIE card applications are all handled locally, and a gestor familiar with the Malaga Foreigners’ Office will navigate the process smoothly.

Post-Brexit, the process for British nationals is the same as anywhere in Spain — the Non-Lucrative Visa for those not working for a Spanish employer, applied for at the Spanish consulate in the UK. An immigration lawyer or gestor can advise on which route applies to your situation.

Cost of living in Malaga

Malaga is noticeably more affordable than the Costa del Sol towns to the west. Marbella and Estepona command a premium; Malaga city offers a better value-to-lifestyle ratio for most people.

A one-bedroom rental in central Malaga typically runs €900 to €1,500 per month. In the wider province, including the towns around the city and the Axarquía region to the east, costs drop significantly. Day-to-day living costs are lower than the coast and considerably lower than Northern Europe.

For expats relocating from the UK, the comparison is usually favourable enough that the cost question is rarely the barrier. The practical and administrative side of the move tends to be the more meaningful challenge.
